If that were true, it can't be a new thing. These things sound like they were established stories.

However, it's possible it was caused by some spell, even as a side effect. But without further evidence, it's impossible to know for sure.

a lot of the books we found inside went missing from the coven's library 20-50 years ago. someone knew about that place.

and something cleared the signs of infection up around it.

In other words, the expedition might've been a front for someone to get access to what was hidden in the cave.

I did think that a cave free of infection did sound too good to be true...

it was a trap, whatever else it was. we were cannon fodder.

most of those books from the coven? master spellwork for enchantment and abjuration. librarian said miss nessie is the only witch he could think of off the top of his head who could handle spells like that if she was determined enough.

the other books were for alchemy that uses cwyld-infected ingredients.

Wow, so whoever was in that cave before had to be extremely powerful.

it's not practiced in the coven currently, at least not that the librarian knows. but it could have been a few things. trying to find a cure, poisoning, eternal life, necromancy. they don't know any current spells that use it specifically the way these books stated.

but it's something to be aware of.

Yeah, it raises some disturbing possibilities alright...

We still need more information though. I get the feeling there's a whole other side of this place we haven't seen yet.

It was an event that happened back in my world, about 1200 years ago? Civilization was really advanced back then, but some giant catastrophe destroyed all that and sent the world into the dark ages for centuries. That's the Great Collapse.
