i recognize about four words in your profile, so it doesn't paint a very clear picture at all for me. and yes, it is.

there are good surprises. discovering you have more food than you thought. finding something interesting in a ruin. that sort of thing.

though yeah, most surprises tend to be unpleasant, in my experience.
